Philosophy

Becoming an effective reader and writer builds confidence for future success in college and beyond. At The Reading/Writing Connection we provide academic support and enrichment to public and private school students.

The ties between reading for meaning and expressing thoughts authentically - it is difficult to have one without the other - are examined and built through strategies designed to help organize thoughts and present information clearly.

Academic success lies in the combined understanding and application of reading comprehension and the written word.

"New Format for Redesigned ACT"

"If you are planning to take your SATs or ACTs this year, take comfort in numbers: More than two million students will take this test this year!

The best way to prepare for this test is get the "lay of the land" first. Knowledge is power, and it's a lot less daunting if you know what to expect. " by Dr. Norma Irom, July 12, 2015

"2016 SATs Will Put Stronger Emphasis on Graphic Literacy"

“Fortune favors the prepared mind,” as Louis Pasteur once said. So as school revs up this month, so do SAT prep classes. Students might be surprised, however, at the amount of time dedicated to visual literacy skills. Scientific American, August 18, 2015

Testimonials

"I am excited to report Kira's recent ACT scores: English: 35, Math: 34, Reading: 35, Composite: 35. We are both so thrilled and want to thank you for working with her! Kira has moved up in every single subject! "

— Kay L., Greenwich, CT

"My 8 year old daughter struggled with her reading and confidence in her academic abilities. Dr. Irom provided her with the strategies and skills to become a more fluid and confident reader. At the beginning, my daughter went to Dr. Irom with reluctance and now she goes quite willingly. "

— Jamie W., Rye Brook, NY

"I just received my SAT scores: 790 on the Writing section (with no multiple choice errors!) and an 800 on the Critical Reading ! Thank you so much for all of the help that you have given me. I cannot believe I received these scores after getting only a 710 on the reading and a 720 on the writing my first time around! This is such a great help to me in this process of applying to schools and I cannot thank you enough for helping me get here! "

Isabel L.

"My 3 children worked with Dr. Irom on their college application essays; each had different needs.  My son struggled getting started, and Dr. Irom helped him brainstorm great topics, which he was excited to write about and she helped him edit his essays for clarity of voice. My daughters needed help shaping their ideas and with editing. Dr. Irom taught them strategies for impactful writing. We strongly believe that working with Dr. Irom removed the stress from the application process, helped our children become better writers, and resulted in each of them securing admission to their first choice schools (Wash U, Kenyon and Duke)!" -- Mary D., White Plains NY
